When cohort tables mislead: seasonality, releases, and quiet weeks

Three ordinary product events that bend cohort lines, and how to annotate them before you brief a stakeholder.

Cohort lines bend for ordinary reasons. Three appear again and again in application retention work across the United Kingdom.

Seasonality

School holidays, retail peaks, and tax deadlines change signup quality and return behaviour. Annotate the calendar before you declare a cohort “worse.”

Releases

A mid-week release can split a signup week into two experiences. Prefer release-aware cohorts or mark the release date on the chart when you brief stakeholders.

Quiet weeks

Marketing pauses and outages produce thin signup weeks that look dramatic in percentage terms. Call out the denominator. A careful retention cohort analysis treats quiet weeks as context, not as a verdict on the product.
